Reader Reviews

I read this book in 2 nights! It reads sort of like a novel, with a dialogue that makes you not want to put it down. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next! It is told, simultaneously, through the lenses of a young Ukrainian boy and his adoptive American mother. Pippa has the unique ability to persuade Andry to share memories of his life before adoption, and Andry, quite eloquently, shares his early life experiences in a Ukrainian orphanage. His and his sister’s lives were forever and magnificently changed by this American couple who wanted to share their lives by adopting an older child. It had me captivated from start to finish!

Fascinating & Unique, A great read!!!

This was all at the same time a beautiful, heartwarming while gut-wrenching and eye-opening memoir. What an amazing journey of many stories for both authors and their family members touched by the experiences as told in their many short stories. You can practically hear the authors in their distinct, unique and personal voices telling you about their life experiences - as if you were in the the same room. I felt a range of emotions in the two days reading this book. It will stay with me forever. It was worth every second spent reading this book!

You'll want to know the authors personally!

I loved the book and read it in 2 days. It’s rare that you come across a narrative that so grips you. Pippa and Andre tell it like it is and that makes it so compelling. Reading about growing up in a poor Ukrainian village, life in an orphanage, adjusting to a new life in America, embracing and nurturing damaged children, is a shocking and uplifting story at the same time. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Pippa and Andre’s book was so inspiring to not only people that are interested in adopting but to everyone. It’s so inspiring and shows just how good people really are. The way adoption can change so many lives in a positive way. I enjoyed every single word of this wonderful story of this entire family.

A Story Of Love

Loved this book. The stories are incredible and there are no words to express the emotions that are created with each one. I am so proud of Pippa and her son Andry for publishing their story and for sharing it with us. I can not recommend this book enough, so heartfelt and touching. Just couldn't put it down!!!

Amazing Story Of Adoption

Just finished the book and it is a beautiful story for anyone, in particular if you have a blended or family that has grown through adoption.

Beautiful Written

Fair Disclosure: I know Pippa and Andry. In fact, it is because of Pippa and Ron's adoption of Andry's sister Olya that I adopted my own two Ukrainian siblings, Nastia and Sasha. But I truly had no idea until reading this book, of the tragedy of Andry's life before his adoption. Nor of the depth of his intellect or the keenness of his observational skills. That he, after the neglect and hunger and deprivation he suffered as a child, has grown into a well-adjusted man with the ability to love and be loved is a testament to the human spirit writ large.

This book is essentially a collection of short stories, one per chapter, told largely in parallel by Andry and his mother Pippa. We learn about Andry's birth family: the lazy, abusive petty criminal that was his father; the docile, seemingly helpless mother and grandmother; the brother and sister who one by one were adopted and moved to other countries. And all of this in Andry's own, often dispassionate words, as if describing a movie he once saw.

We follow his adventures in his native village as he learns to steal, not just to feed himself, but to collect things that boys everywhere covet, and which his family will never be able to provide. There is no remorse in his tales, just a matter of fact tone that mirrors the hopelessness of poverty.

At the same time, we feel the unconditional love that Pippa gave him, her determination to reunite him with his siblings and the difficulties of her own journey helping him adjust to a "normal" life with a nuclear American family. Pippa's innate maternal wisdom helps her to break down the protective wall with which Andry surrounded himself, stone by stone, lesson by lesson. We feel her pain and frustration, and occasionally her anger. And thankfully, we learn that the two of them succeeded in bonding and putting the past into deep and meaningful perspective.

This book is especially meaningful to me because of the experiences my own daughter brought with her from similar circumstances. She was 9 when we adopted her, and had sadly had to experience neglect, hunger, abandonment and abuse herself before my ex-wife and I swooped into her life and brought her to America with her much younger brother. She was not as angry or as self-protective as Andry, but like him, she was able to remember, to overcome and to thrive. I know this is not true for all adoptive children. But I can say that anyone with a big enough heart to consider making room in their life for a child not born to them will find challenge AND inspiration in reading Andry's and Pippa's story.

Gripping Tale of Transformation Against All odds

I read this book over my weekend, one of those reads where you just keep reading. Each chapter is a quick vignette, told in first person alternating between the mother and the son.

The mom shares about her experiences going through the adoption process and the adjusting process with her daughter, and then eventually, son. She's a lovely writer and you feel how she feels.

The son shares about his experiences growing up in Ukraine - in poverty within an alcoholic home, and within an orphanage. His writings are short, matter-of-fact, and reading through his experiences gives the reader such a visceral sense of what life was, and still is, like for so many people living in similar conditions in post-USSR.

These stories, and the coming together of this family, are both heartbreaking and absolutely beautiful. Most of all, they're REAL. I learned a lot and felt a lot while reading this memoir. I think anyone would. I totally, completely, recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
